Inspirational people influence our thoughts and everyday life; they help us make mundane motivating. From 2009, Montblanc has been paying homage to some exceptional individuals with the Great Characters collection, whose lives and work have made a lasting impact on human civilization. Montblanc introduces a collection inspired by James Byron Dean, an American actor and a cultural icon of teenage disillusionment and social estrangement exemplified by the title of his most celebrated film, “Rebel Without a Cause”, where he played the role of a troubled teenage Jim Stark. This edition features a red precious resin cap and barrel resembling the red leather jacket worn by Dean in the film, while the patterns is inspired by the jeans he wore. The clip is a gun paying tribute to his famous scene in the 1956 film “Giant”. The cap ring is engraved with one of James Dean’s most famous quotes: “Dream as if you’ll live forever. Live as if you’ll die today.” The fountain pen is piston filling, comes in Au 585 Solid gold nib with platinum coating. Stay inspired with this red tool made of high quality materials.

Great pen. Would be perfect if the cap could attach to the end of the pen when writing with it but otherwise an amazing pen.
I never really understood the big deal about James Dean. I thought the movies were “ok” for the era but my opinion has been that James Dean was a little one dimensional as an actor. On the screen he brought his emotionally troubled tempest like demeanor, brooding eyes, etc but that was the extent of it. There is no doubt that he embodied that “handsome as ****, super cool, bad boy” look that I’m sure all the poodle skirt wearing girls in the fifties loved. Had he not tragically died in his Porsche, maybe he would have been another Brando. Some buyers may collect this pen because of that but I didn’t . I bought it because I prefer a good quality item, love a fountain pen, adore the color red especially when on a car, shoot shotguns and collect a knife or two (more on this in a minute), and like to have the boldest pen in the room when taking notes. This pen checks all those boxes. All in all, its certainly a mans man pen! A fountain pen this handsome is fantastic but if it writes horrible it doesn’t matter. The platinum coated 14k Au585 gold nib is adorned with racing flags and the license plate from Dean’s Porsche as well as the Mont Blanc 4810. I purchased mine in medium width which is an absolute dream to write with. It levitates on the paper, writing under its own weight, is soft but not crazy flexible and has a slight line variation with pressure. Apply a tiny bit of pressure and slow down your stroke and it lays down a fair amount of ink. Flip it over and write like an extra extra fine with a little bit of scratchiness. I filled it with the Mont Blanc James Dean Red which is the perfect compliment to the pen. I would prefer if it had a ink level window like some of the other Great Character pens but it doesn’t. The inks hue is bold but not shiny or too bright. There are a lot of pens out there that write like that at 1/3 of the price. The whole point of this pen is how it looks! Platinum coatings for the ultimate chrome on a car look, textured denim like red resin body (Rebel without a cause), contrasting Ruthenium shotgun barrel clip (Giant), topped with a Ruthenium top cap shaped like the end of a switchblade with a “1” engraved like a dollar. Other engravings are the birth and death dates of Dean, the GPS coordinates of where his Porsche Crashed, and words “Dream as if you’ll live forever. Live as if you’ll die today”. It even has the brass end of a shotgun shell poking out the side of the cap! There are so many elements combined into this pens design I’m sure I missed a couple. Its big, bold, heavy, awesome, and I LOVE IT! Mont Blanc even recognizes that all their logo can do is detract from this bad boy so they limited it to a minuscule 1/8” little hood ornament on the top. People can’t help but comment on it everytime I take it out and they will for you too. If you want a big statement pen and have the means to spend on an item like this, Do It! You wont regret it at all. I’m not sure I’ll ever find another pen that is so aligned with my personality. This pen may be a collection killer...
