About Wahl-Eversharp
🖋️ Brand Story & Heritage
"Since 1914, we are the history..."
The legendary Wahl-Eversharp story began in 1913 when Charles Rood Keeran applied for a patent on the world's first practical mechanical pencil. Originally hand-crafted by the Heath Corporation in New Jersey and famously test-marketed during the 1913 holiday season at Wanamaker's in New York City, these luxury writing tools quickly caught the attention of the industry. To scale into mass production, Keeran partnered with the Wahl Adding Machine Company of Chicago. By 1921, the iconic Eversharp pencil became an international sensation, selling over 12 million units and setting a global benchmark for writing precision.
Wahl stepped into the fine fountain pen arena in 1917 by acquiring the Boston Fountain Pen Company—a move also facilitated by Keeran. Originally, the company utilized the "Wahl" name for its pens and "Eversharp" for its pencils. However, by the end of the 1920s, the company unified its identity under the legendary Wahl-Eversharp banner, marking all subsequent luxury pens and pencils with the combined moniker. Though the original company's historic run concluded in the late 1950s after an acquisition by the Parker Pen Company, its architectural spirit never faded.
In 2012, vintage writing experts Syd Saperstein and Emmanuel Caltagirone acquired the rights to the original trademarks, proudly reviving the brand as the new WAHL-EVERSHARP Company. Today, the modern firm breathes life back into the golden era of fine writing, meticulously manufacturing high-performance luxury fountain pens based entirely on the brand’s original, timeless patented designs.
