Store Visit from Cary of Kenro Industries!

Last Thursday and Friday we had a very exciting event at our store:  a visit from Cary Yeager of Kenro Industries.  Kenro is the US distributor for some of the most interesting and innovative brands that we carry (Aurora, Esterbrook, Montegrappa, Otto Hutt, Pininfarina, and ystudio), so when store owner Leena told me about Cary's upcoming visit, I knew right away that I wanted to write a blog article about it and share what it was like from my point of view. I hope you will enjoy this story featuring Cary's picks and insights, plus my own views on his recommended pens.   Behind the...

Staff Picks, Part One! - Retro 51 Tornado Buzz

Happy summer, blog readers! I always feel like summer is a time for having fun, and I thought it would be fun to do a little something different for this week's blog, so I decided to ask my colleagues about their favorite thing from Pen Boutique. I told them their pick had to be a product they own and use regularly, because I really wanted a first-hand account of why they love it and how it fits into their everyday life. I interviewed three staff members so far, and plan to follow up with more installments soon. Today I will be starting with Fana's pick, the Retro 51...

Fun with Water Resistant Inks

Inky Inspiration When I'm working in the store, I always get excited when customers talk to me about ink. It's a topic I'm passionate about, and it's so fun to share knowledge and inky experiences. My idea for this blog article started with two of these  conversations, both of which happened to be about water resistant inks.  A few months ago, a customer asked me if I had ever used Diamine Archival Registrar's blue-black, an iron gall ink that we carry in two sizes--100 ml and 30ml. I had not, but I was very interested to hear her thoughts, as I've always been...

My Unexpected Love Affair with the Faber-Castell Hexo

An Experiment We were short-staffed recently, so I couldn't schedule a day to work from home and prepare the blog. I was very busy in the store, but that doesn't mean I wasn't thinking about my upcoming blog! It struck me that it would be a good opportunity to take advantage of the additional lead time and chose a pen to give a true test-drive as an everyday carry pen. Instead of just trying it quickly as I do in my big reviews where I cover lots of pens, I could focus on experiencing the pen over time in a real world situation.  When the store closed for the day, I ran...

Nuts about Notebooks

Nuts about Notebooks

Thursday, May 19th, was National Notebook Day, so I thought it would be fun to take home a selection of the notebooks we carry and try them out. Customers often ask me how our different papers handle fountain pens, but, since I had personally tested so few of them, I couldn't give a very good answer. Well, now I can! Come along as I sample Rhodia, Write Notepads, Mnemosyne, Apica, Clairefontaine, Oasis, and Yamamoto's Memoterior sampler for Fountain Pen.    Experimenting with Paper First of all, if you are using a fountain pen and you haven't tried it with fountain...
