Fountain pens are special, and once filled, they are difficult to resell upon return. When purchasing a fountain pen, it is recommended that you test it by dipping the nib in ink. If you use the supplied cartridges or fill it with ink, we must send the pen to the manufacturer's repair facility to resell it. We want to ensure all our customers receive a brand-new, unused pen. Therefore, we charge a nominal 20% restocking fee to cover repair and shipping costs to the manufacturer's repair center. These pens are then resold in our outlet store. Please note that the restocking fee applies only to fountain pens that have been filled with ink. If you have any questions, please contact us.

The Color of History: Kuretake Meiji No Iro – Ebicha

Step back into the transformative era of Japan with the Kuretake Meiji No Iro collection. This exquisite series of inks is inspired by the vibrant colors that defined the Meiji period—a time when traditional Japanese aesthetics merged with Western influence. Among these storied hues, Ebicha (Grape-Brown) stands as a symbol of intellectual elegance and academic prestige.

This is more than just ink; it is a liquid tribute to the scholars and trailblazers of 19th-century Japan.

✨ The Essence of Ebicha: A Sophisticated Palette

The name "Ebicha" translates literally to "grape tea," a rich, maroon-leaning brown that carries a distinct purplish undertone. Historically, this color was popularized for the hakama (traditional trousers) worn by female students at the dawn of Japan’s modern educational system.

  • Water-Based Dye Magic: Formulated as a high-quality water-based dye ink, Ebicha offers exceptional fluidity. It flows smoothly from the nib, providing a luxurious writing experience that captures the delicate nuances of shading.

  • Historical Accuracy: Kuretake has meticulously researched the dyestuffs of the Meiji era to recreate this specific "maroon" that balanced traditional sobriety with a new, fashionable vitality.

  • Elegant Presentation: Each 20ml glass bottle is a work of art in itself. The heavy glass base and vintage-inspired labeling make it a centerpiece for any desk, reflecting the high standards of Japanese craftsmanship.

  • Exceptional Versatility: While many boutique inks are restricted to dip pens, Ebicha is engineered for a wide variety of tools. Its gentle formulation ensures it is safe for your most precious fountain pens while remaining vibrant enough for artistic calligraphy.

🖋️ One Ink, Infinite Tools

The Meiji No Iro collection is uniquely compatible across a broad spectrum of writing instruments:

  1. Fountain Pens: Perfectly balanced for consistent flow and easy cleaning.

  2. Glass & Dip Pens: High surface tension allows the ink to cling to the nib, providing longer writing sessions between dips.

  3. Kuretake Karappo-pen: Designed specifically to work with Kuretake's "empty pen" system, allowing you to create your own custom felt-tip or brush markers using Ebicha ink.

🔍 Explore the Meiji No Iro Collection

The Ebicha hue is a cornerstone of the series, but the Meiji era was a kaleidoscope of color. Explore these notable variants at Pen Boutique:

  1. Kuretake Meiji No Iro - Shinkucha – A deep, "New Grass" green that captures the botanical curiosity of the era.

  2. Kuretake Meiji No Iro - Araishu – A washed-out vermilion that evokes the warm, sun-faded tones of traditional textiles.

  3. Kuretake Meiji No Iro - Kuroganeiro – A sophisticated "Iron Color," a dark blue-grey that mirrors the industrial spirit of the Meiji Restoration.

The Archivist’s Perspective: "Ebicha is the color of progress. To write with it is to channel the spirit of the Meiji scholars—where every stroke is a bridge between the heritage of the past and the possibilities of the future."
